As the largest planning application to be granted in Newcastle for a generation, Downing Plaza signals a high water mark for the city’s regeneration.
The former Scottish and Newcastle Brewery has been transformed into six new iconic buildings designed by the acclaimed Ian Simpson Architects and built by George Downing Construction Ltd. Featuring 120,000 sq ft of teaching space, a 183-room hotel, 1296 student bed rooms and extensive retail space, the scheme will form a impressive gateway to Newcastle City Council’s Science Central master plan.
Downing Plaza has achieved a record-breaking commercial pre-let of 120,000 sq ft with Newcastle University Business School.
Phase 1 - New Business School for the University of Newcastle - 120,000 sq ft of new teaching accommodation for under-graduate and post-graduate studies. Completed March 2011.
Phase 2 - Central Link. 520 student bedrooms built across 3 blocks of accommodation. Completed August 2011.
Phase 3 - Central St James. 332 student bedrooms in a mix of en-suite cluster bedrooms and studio apartments. Completed August 2012.
Phase 4 - The Ceres. This 18 storey tower will provide 115 studio apartments and an additional 329 cluster en-suite bedrooms. For completion August 2014.
