Developer Downing has retained a nomination agreement with King’s College London to operate all 578 student bedrooms at its landmark Atlas development in Lambeth, south London.
The arrangement will see King’s College London continue to operate all of the student bedrooms at Atlas to accommodate their respective students for the 2019/2020 academic year.
Downing’s Lambeth student accommodation agreement with King’s College London has already been running for one year and this September will be the second intake of the university’s students at Atlas.
The £160 million building is Downing’s flagship development in the capital, located on South Lambeth Road in Vauxhall, and features a mixture of modern en-suite bedrooms, studio rooms and three and four-bedroom apartments.
With a 32nd floor roof garden overlooking London’s skyline, Atlas is a striking addition to Lambeth’s student accommodation offering. The building’s leisure centre, which includes a 25-metre swimming pool, is also now fully operational.
Situated in the heart of Vauxhall and Nine Elms in Zone 1, the building’s exterior has been designed to reflect the area’s rich heritage. The façade is clad with ceramic tiles, with a speckling of earthy tones as a reference to Lambeth’s 17th and 18th century pottery and ceramic industry.
Elsewhere in Lambeth, Downing has revealed the name of its new £35 million, 133 bedroom student accommodation in the heart of the historic Lambeth Palace Conservation Area in Zone 1.
The new high-quality, sustainable studio scheme will be called Marinus Studios. The word marinus is Latin for marine and the name is a nod to the nearby Marine Society and Sea Cadets charity, which is currently based in a building adjacent to the development site on Lambeth Road.
As part of this scheme, Downing is delivering a new 12,000 sq. ft commercial office space on the ground and lower ground floors of the building, which will eventually be used as the Marine Society and Sea Cadets’ head office.
Lambeth Council granted planning permission for the mixed-use scheme, which supports the council’s wider vision to provide a modern, world-class living space for students and to provide new commercial office space, thereby reinvigorating the surrounding neighbourhoods.
